My name is Harmeet Grewal, and I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I have a bachelor's degree in professional communications and experience as an instructional designer and project manager. I've also worked as a technical writer developing maintenance, repair, and overhaul manuals for the Canadian military. When I am not working or pursuing higher learning, I enjoy trying new foods and spending time with family and friends. I also love traveling and have already visited India, Mexico, the United States, and most of western Europe. I am excited to continue expanding this list and experiencing more of the world.

social learning theorySocial learning theory is a form of constructivism and it states that learning happens when people interact with one another and collaboratively construct their knowledge (John-Steiner & Mahn, 1996). When designing online learning experiences, I try to foster communities of learning (e.g. through group work and discussions) so that students can engage in social learning. This allows more knowledgeable students to help less knowledgeable students through their zone of proximal development (ZPD) and this knowledge sharing benefits both students. Social interaction is also especially important in online learning environments since students may feel isolated when learning online.

situated learning theorySituated learning theory states that learning needs to be situated within authentic contexts that are relevant to learners in order to be effective (Bell, Maeng, & Binns, 2013). I create situated learning experiences in online learning environments by prompting learners to apply their knowledge to their personal, academic, and/or professional lives. For example, learners may be asked how a particular theory or concept can be applied at work to improve their projects.
